Therapy grounded in safety, connection and belonging

Drawing & Talking

Therapy for emotional wellbeing

What is drawing and talking?

Drawing & Talking therapy is a gentle, attachment-based approach that allows children and adolescents to explore their thoughts and feelings through drawing and storytelling. Through creating pictures and stories, and being asked non-intrusive questions about them, children begin to make sense of their internal world. Over time, a symbolic resolution is found to internal conflicts and any trauma can begin to heal.

By addressing underlying emotional needs, this intervention can help individuals better manage their emotions, behaviour and learning. The process helps build healthy attachments and creates a safe, structured space to process inner stresses and trauma in a way that does not rely solely on words.

How it works

Drawing & Talking therapy is carried out on a 1:1 basis in 30 minute sessions over a block of 12 weeks. Sessions are held at the same time and place each week to provide consistency. Each session follows a structured format, where the child draws and is invited to talk about their picture/s or tell a story about it. As a child-led intervention, it proceeds at the individual’s pace.

As it is an internal process, it can take time to see any outcomes. This is one reason it is important to undertake the full 12-week programme.

Who it is for

Drawing & Talking therapy is suitable for children aged from 5 years to adults. It is particularly supportive for:

  • individuals with neurodiverse traits;

  • individuals who have experienced issues with anger, anxiety, assault, behaviour, bereavement/loss/grief, bullying, depression, self-esteem, self-injury, trauma.

I am happy to work in individual’s homes and work in schools delivering Drawing & Talking therapy.
